Alongside the virtual lectures by WashU faculty and the keynote speaker, we present as part of the 2023 Faculty Book Celebration this online display of recent books and digital projects by faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. A selection of these books will also be on display at the in-person event. The Campus Bookstore in Mallinckrodt Center is happy to hook you up with many of these new titles!

New Faculty Books Published 2022 & 2021

The publication of a monograph or significant creative work is a milestone in the career of a scholar in the humanities. It represents a decades’ worth — and sometimes much longer — of research, writing and rewriting. This work is made possible by fellowships, sabbaticals, research grants and a deep dive into materials in often far-flung locations. Finally, and amid the competing demands of teaching, service and other research projects at various stages, a book is born.

*The Arts of Democratization: Styling Political Sensibilities in Postwar West Germany* (edited with Jennifer M. Kapczynski) (University of Michigan Press, 2022)

Scholars of democracy long looked to the Federal Republic of Germany as a notable “success story,” a model for how to transition from a violent, authoritarian regime to a peaceable nation of rights. Although this account has been contested since its inception, the narrative has proved resilient — and it is no surprise that the current moment of crisis that Western democracies are experiencing has provoked new interest in how democracies come to be. *The Arts of Democratization: Styling Political Sensibilities in Postwar West Germany* casts a fresh look at the early years of this fledgling democracy and draws attention to the broad range of ways democracy and the democratic subject were conceived and rendered at this time.

These essays highlight the contradictory and competing impulses that ran through the project to democratize postwar society and cast a critical eye toward the internal biases that shaped the model of Western democracy. In so doing, the contributions probe critical questions that we continue to grapple with today. How did postwar thinkers understand what it meant to be democratic? Did they conceive of democratic subjectivity in terms of acts of participation, a set of beliefs or principles, or perhaps in terms of particular feelings or emotions? How did the work to define democracy and its subjects deploy notions of nation, race, and gender or sexuality? As this book demonstrates, the case of West Germany offers compelling ways to think more broadly about the emergence of democracy. *The Arts of Democratization* offers lessons that resonate with the current moment as we consider what interventions may be necessary to resuscitate democracy today.

*Jane Eyre in German Lands, The Import of Romance, 1848-1918* (Bloomsbury, 2022)

Lynne Tatlock examines the transmission, diffusion, and literary survival of *Jane Eyre* in the German-speaking territories and the significance and effects thereof, 1848-1918. Engaging with scholarship on the romance novel, she presents an historical case study of the generative power and protean nature of Brontë's new romance narrative in German translation, adaptation, and imitation as it involved multiple agents, from writers and playwrights to readers, publishers, illustrators, reviewers, editors, adaptors, and translators.

*Jane Eyre in German Lands* traces the ramifications in the paths of transfer that testify to widespread creative investment in romance as new ideas of women's freedom and equality topped the horizon and sought a home, especially in the middle classes. As Tatlock outlines, the multiple German instantiations of Brontë's novel-four translations, three abridgments, three adaptations for general readers, nine adaptations for younger readers, plays, farces, and particularly the fiction of the popular German writer E. Marlitt and its many adaptations-evince a struggle over its meaning and promise. Yet precisely this multiplicity (repetition, redundancy, and proliferation) combined with the romance narrative's intrinsic appeal in the decades between the March Revolutions and women's franchise enabled the cultural diffusion, impact, and long-term survival of *Jane Eyre* as German reading.

Though its focus on the circulation of texts across linguistic boundaries and intertwined literary markets and reading cultures, *Jane Eyre in German Lands* unsettles the national paradigm of literary history and makes a case for a fuller and inclusive account of the German literary field.

*Tear Down the Walls: White Radicalism and Black Power in 1960s Rock* (University of Chicago Press, 2021)

From the earliest days of rock and roll, white artists regularly achieved fame, wealth and success that eluded the Black artists whose work had preceded and inspired them. This dynamic continued into the 1960s, even as the music and its fans grew to be more engaged with political issues regarding race. In *Tear Down the Walls,* Patrick Burke tells the story of white American and British rock musicians’ engagement with Black Power politics and African-American music during the volatile years of 1968 and 1969. The book sheds new light on a significant but overlooked facet of 1960s rock — white musicians and audiences casting themselves as political revolutionaries by enacting a romanticized vision of African-American identity.

These artists’ attempts to cast themselves as revolutionary were often naïve, misguided or arrogant, but they could also reflect genuine interest in African-American music and culture and sincere investment in antiracist politics. White musicians such as those in popular rock groups Jefferson Airplane, the Rolling Stones and the MC5, fascinated with Black performance and rhetoric, simultaneously perpetuated a long history of racial appropriation and misrepresentation and made thoughtful, self-aware attempts to respectfully present African-American music in forms that white leftists found politically relevant. In *Tear Down the Walls,* Burke neither condemns white rock musicians as inauthentic nor elevates them as revolutionary. The result is a fresh look at 1960s rock that provides new insight into how popular music both reflects and informs our ideas about race and how white musicians and activists can engage meaningfully with Black political movements.

That, in any case, is what I set out to create in writing An Introduction to First-Order Logic.’ Heil has certainly accomplished this with perhaps the most explanatorily thorough and pedagogically rich text I’ve personally come across.
