Mellon Foundation has awarded the Center for the Humanities a substantial four-year grant to support our faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences in imagining new approaches to doctoral training that facilitate a wide range of career outcomes. The initiative, Redefining Doctoral Education in the Humanities (RDE, or “Ready”), kicks off the 2019–20 academic year with its second annual Faculty Retreat on on Friday, September 20 and the morning of Friday, September 27. The retreat will be of interest to faculty in the humanities and humanistic social sciences who teach graduate/advanced undergraduate courses or who plan to develop such courses in the future. This year’s agenda features presenters, opportunities to engage representatives of local and regional humanities organizations and institutions, as well as a full afternoon of hands-on work in curation, exhibition, and syllabus design. In collaboration with the George B. Vashon Museum and University Libraries, this workshop will provide a hands-on introduction to curatorial practice and exhibition development, including digital exhibits, as elements of interdisciplinary curricular innovation. Staff from the Libraries’ Julian Edison Department of Special Collections will be joined by Calvin Riley, Executive Director of the Vashon, to lead a series of exercises featuring a variety of primary source material, including works by the St. Louis-based African American artist Spencer Thornton Banks.
