RDE’s 2023 workshop is for humanities scholars who seek to incorporate community engagement in their teaching, research and service. The workshop will emphasize the ethics and process of community engagement and guide participants through designing a mutually beneficial and reciprocal project or course. Sessions will introduce local experts, on-campus resources and fruitful models of engaged humanities projects. Community members will join the workshop for a frank conversation about the power dynamics and practical aspects of community engaged projects. Participants will leave the workshop with a working knowledge of best practices for community engagement as well as a draft sketch for a community engaged project of their own design. The guest speaker for this year’s RDE workshop is Davarian Baldwin, the Paul E. Raether Distinguished Professor of American Studies at Trinity College, founding director of the Smart Cities Lab, and author of In the Shadow of the Ivory Tower: How Universities are Plundering Our Cities. Baldwin will be delivering the Faculty Book Celebration lecture on Thursday, February 23 and joining workshop sessions on Friday, February 24.

Registered participants are limited to 12. Participants are expected to attend both the talk on Thursday and the full workshop on Friday. All Friday sessions will be in person, and the Thursday talk will be offered in virtual and in-person formats. As has been the case with past RDE workshops, participants will receive a stipend of $500.
