Shirl Yang is a literary theorist asking what fiction can teach us about finance. Her book project, which traces how the affective dimensions of economic crisis have been understood and misunderstood in contemporary American literature and popular culture, argues that artists and writers do not cede but take on the market as a site of political reimagination. A co-edited special issue on the afterlives of the affective turn is forthcoming, and an essay on emotional immediacy and media has been published inĀ Post-45 Contemporaries. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Chicago, and a BA in English and Biology from Williams College.
